How We Practice: From Beginner to Guild-Mate

abqswords

The first action you’ll take in joining the Guild is to contact me directly (info on Home Page) to express interest. I’ll schedule an interview with you and if I believe that you are a fit for the Guild and you believe our Culture matches your perspective, you’ll be invited to join and fill out the appropriate waiver and emergency contact information forms.

In the first round of training, we will focus on my Longsword Foundations course. In this course, you will be exposed to basic strikes, footwork, parries and other fundamentals required to give you a solid base for further practice. You will also become acquainted with safety practices and use of safe equipment when training with partners. Most of these materials we cover will come from the Kolner Fechtbuch and pieces taken from supplementary materials - all are discussed in my post About Your Coach.

The format will involve private, one-on-one or small-group (no more than 3) settings to maximize the quality of early-start training. The service is “to you”: you will provide the training space for us to work and I will bring all necessary equipment for the practice - including your coach! Over the years, I have found this approach to be the fastest way to develop quality martial artists who are ready to drill with others and “take it to the next level” as quickly as possible. The format is meant to accelerate your progress and I believe in it deeply.

As the Guild matures, I will bring individuals who have completed Longsword Foundations into group-sessions for partner drilling and more advanced training where we will explore additional manuscripts, especially the Longsword section of the Codex Guelf (also mentioned in my post About Your Coach). With a solid foundation in Longsword, I plan also to offer work in Sword & Buckler fencing as an outgrowth.
